Root Chakra Yoga Poses to Help Unblock Energy

Chakra (pronounced Chaa-Kruh) is an ancient Indian term for energy points in the human body. Chakras appear as spinning wheels in the human body that allow energy to flow openly and freely. When these Chakras become misaligned, the Chakras can become blocked, leading to adverse behavioral and physiological effects.

Unbalanced Chakras contribute to some physical and psychological effects. When these energies can’t flow properly, the afflicted may feel stressed, anxious, or generally unwell. Some prefer to see healers for Chakra balancing to release and correct the flow of energy. But Yoga offers similar effects.

What is the Root Chakra?

The first Chakra, known as the Muladhara or “root” Chakra, can be found at the base of the spine and relates to one’s ability to ground or root themselves. The Root Chakra affects one’s relationships, feelings of security, and sense of home. 

As the name implies, the Root Chakra relates to feeling grounded and secure in the world. Essentially, you will notice imbalances between the world around you and your relationships. A blocked Root Chakra can also cause an array of physiological effects.

Signs Your Root Chakra Needs Balancing

There are many signs your Root Chakra may need balancing. When the Muladhara is blocked, energy cannot flow freely, and the Chakra wheel won’t spin properly (so to speak). The signs of an unbalanced Root Chakra can vary, but it is powerful enough to impact one’s physical and mental health.

If you suspect your Root Chakra is blocked or misaligned, consider these physical effects:

  • Changes in your weight. Perhaps you’ve lost or gained weight with little explanation.
  • Constipation.
  • Pain in the Pelvic area.
  • Incontinence.

As stated previously, the Root Chakra can also affect your mood and mental health. Here’s what to look for:

  • Becoming distracted easily.
  • Speeding through tasks.
  • Feelings of exhaustion.
  • Lethargy
  • Anxiety, stress, or depression.
  • Feeling like you’re stuck in a rut.
  • Loss of motivation or inability to take action.

These symptoms, combined with feelings of disconnection from people you care about and the environment around you, can certainly point to a blocked Root Chakra. Fortunately, there are ways to help.

Freeing the natural energies (your life force) can promote health and well-being. The Root Chakra, to be more specific, can do many positive things when energy is allowed to move freely. First, you will feel more comfortable with the world around you. Next, you’ll begin to feel more grounded and more secure.

The stress will dissipate if you’re unsure about your sense of place or where you belong. Finally, when you feel more secure in your environment, you can begin to work on your relationships.

Root Chakra Yoga Poses to Help Unblock Energy

After identifying how your Root Chakra affects your mood and daily life, you can create a calm, constant energy flow with Yoga. These techniques are simple and perfect for people regardless of experience.

Child’s Pose (Balasana)

The Child’s pose is quite gentle and relaxing. Calming the nervous system, relaxing the spine, and stretching the lower part of the body are all critical to releasing the flow of energy, and the Child’s pose can help.

Sit on your heels and lean forward, stretching your arms deep in front of you as you relax into the floor. 

Warrior 1 (Virabhadrasana 1)

The Warrior pose helps you face your fears and rebalance the energy coursing through your body. Place one foot about four feet in front of your body and plant it deeply in the ground. Then, plant the other foot behind you. 

Bend the knee in front and lunge forward while the rear leg stretches backward. Raise your arms high above your head and lift your chin.

Lotus Pose (Padmasana)

The Lotus pose opens your hips and relieves physical and emotional stress. 

Start in a sitting position and bring your right foot to your left hip. Then, cross your left foot over and bring it to your right hip. Focus on your breathing as you let your hips relax and open. 

People who struggle with knee and joint pain can perform this hip-opening pose by sitting cross-legged without meeting foot to hip.

Triangle Pose (Trikanasana)

The Triangle pose can stimulate your digestive tract, relieve stress, and ease back pain. Some may find it challenging to complete this pose, and that’s where Yoga blocks come in for additional support.

Stand with your feet wide apart. Then, bend toward your right leg, using your right arm as an anchor, and reach for your ankle. Lift your left arm and straighten it. Hold the pose, then switch to the left leg.

Standing Forward Fold (Uttanasana)

The Standing Forward Fold is a great way to expand the glands surrounding your Root Chakra. Stand tall and reach your arms high above your head. Bring your hands and torso down as you lean toward the ground while exhaling.

Hold the pose and inhale while stretching to lengthen your spine. You can extend your spine while you position your head toward the floor.

Tree Pose (Virksasana)

The Tree pose strengthens your lower body and opens the hips. Some beginners struggle to find balance, so it’s best to concentrate on a focal point.

Stand at the Mountain pose (arms stretched above your head, engaging your core, standing tall). Then, bend one leg and rest it on the other. Straighten your pelvis and extend toward the sky. Hold the pose and switch legs after about thirty seconds.

Squat Pose (Malasana)

The Garland pose will bring you closer to the earth and calm your mind. 

You can start by standing in the Mountain pose and slowly enter a deep squat position. As your hips open and your body become closer to the ground, bring your hands together in a prayer position. Press your elbows into your knees and stretch your spine. Hold the pose for thirty seconds.
